Ever wished you could showcase your design skill at its highest potential? To have a chance to redefine and create environments?

We gave young interior designers and architects the opportunity to apply their years of education and training to recreate an existing space. These spaces can be any building, neighbourhood, abandoned structures or even empty sites. Participants were asked to showcase how their designs could aesthetically improve and creatively innovate their chosen space. Lastly, participants were also asked to incorporate eco-friendly designs to ensure a healthier environment for a brighter future.

The voting period has officially ended and we've crowned our winners for the Nippon Paint Young Designer Awards 2012! Do check out the winner's list to see this years champions.

This project requires participants to redesign an existing space; commercial or residential buildings, neighbourhood areas, abandoned structures, or others of their choice. The aim is to demonstrate how the chosen site can be improved in terms of interior or architectural design, energy efficiency (cost savings) and being environmentally friendly.

Participants must inject environmentally friendly designs into their project. In order to substantiate their green concept design, all eco-friendly material and energy efficient systems used must be clearly stated by the participants.

The guideline given will help participants create a design statement. The design statement will be the first thing the judges review on the presentation board.

Your design statement should answer the following:

• Why is this specific space or building chosen?
• What is the purpose of the building, the type of business (if relevant) and location?
• What is the concept and style that is used to redefine the existing design?
• Why were the colours and the colour schemes chosen?
• What is the project's environmental approach in terms of materials, maintenance, energy usage, water and waste management etc.? Kindly justify.

Your design statement must not exceed 100 words.

Climate, energy & water
It is important to optimise the usage of energy in order to reduce load, increase efficiency, and utilise renewable energy.
Building material & ecological environment
Eco-friendly materials aim to reduce environment problems. They can also prevent negative health effects and create safer working environments.
Indoor environment quality (IEQ)
The IEQ of a building has an impact on its occupants health, comfort and productivity. A sustainable building will have good ventilation and minimal use of artificial light.
Green innovation practice
It is essential to name all eco-materials and systems that require less maintenance, less resources, fewer chemicals and are cost effective.

How students create a balance between colours.
Colour coordination
How the colours can blend-in making them look natural.
Colour innovation
Using colours to create a prominent design that stands out.

Designs must have a positive impact that benefits the community.
Space planning
Planning the design and the use of space.
Redefinition of space
Design ideas have to be innovative, creative and beneficial to the public.
Contextual appropriateness
Designs have to be innovative to create for a better world and also become the ideal model for other areas to follow.

DESIGN STATEMENT 10%

Mr. Dickie Ong Chye Huat
Dickie has about 20 years of working experience as a designer.

He has worked for numerous architectural and interior design firms with experience in design to build projects mostly in hospitality and corporate office. Over the years, Dickie has also managed projects overseas. He has attained a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Architecture. He is also a fellow member of the Interior Design Institute of Malaysia (IPDM). Dickie is a registered interior designer with the Board of Architects Malaysia (Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia), a member of the Inspection Team of Malaysian Hotel by Ministry of Culture, Arts and Tourism Malaysia, a former lecturer at KBU International College and a panelist at the Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Pn. Anura Hashim

Protem Council Member MIID, Managing Director of YJA Interiors.

Anura Hashim has more than 20 years of experience spanning a variety of disciplines including broadcasting, antiques and of course, interior design. Having a passion for creating spaces that are trendy yet practical, she established YJA Interiors in 2003. YJA has endeavoured many projects ranging from hotel interiors, to offices, restaurants and residential homes.

Fendarie Su

Member of MIID, MSID, IPDM & LAM, Principle of Santa Fe Interior Architecture Sdn. Bhd.

With 16 years of experience in Interior Design in Malaysia, USA and Holland, Ms. Fendarie Su is currently the Founder & Principle of Santa Fe Interior Architecture Sdn. Bhd, a multi International interior design awards winning firm specialized in conceptual design for corporate offices, institutions, hotels & commercial projects. She holds a B.S. Degree (Hons) Majoring in Interior Design (Fider Accredited) at Utah State University (USU), Utah, USA.

Ms. Monie Mohariff

Ms. Monie, Principal of MZ Design Consultancy since 2002, is a registered interior designer of the Malaysian Board of Architects. She graduated from the University of East London with a Diploma in Architecture (Commendation in Technology) and B. Sc (Hons) Architecture Upper Second Class Honours.

Ms. Monie currently is the Pro Tem Committee Member of the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designer (MIID) since 2009; Chairman of Public Relation Committee.

Currently she is one of the Hotel Rating Inspectors for the Ministry of Tourism Malaysia.

She was also the Past Vice President (2010-2011); Past Honorary Secretary (2008-2010); Council Member (2005-2008) of the Institut Perekabentuk Dalaman Malaysia (IPDM).

In 2010-2011, she was elected as the Exco Member of Balai Ikhtisas Malaysia (BIM).

Mr. Lai Siew Hong

Chief Executive Designer of Blu Water Studio.

Having completed his Tertiary Education in both Malaysia and New York, Mr. Lai Siew Hong qualified as an Interior Designer in 1989 from F.I.T at the State University of New York. His industrial experience widely encompasses of hospitality, corporate offices and commercial with clients such as Accenture, CIMB, Hilton and Westin under his belt.

Ar. Jasmeet Singh Sidhu
(NPYDA Chief Judge)

Principal of Arkitek JazSidhu/Designscape, CEO of Dezignwerkz Asia, Board Member of Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia, Chairman of Architectural Examination Council of Malaysia, Past Vice President of IPDM and Past Council Member of PAM.

Jasmeet Singh Sidhu is a Registered Professional Architect and Interior Designer and has been actively involved in the profession in various professional as well as honorary positions for over 25 years. He works in private practice and is involved in selected commercial, institutional as well as specialist projects in Malaysia, India and the region.

Jasmeet also takes time out to write for Habitus, a specialist design magazine published in Sydney, Australia as well as being the Editor-in-Chief of Architecture Malaysia, PAM's official journal.

Ar. Alvin Lim Hai Seah

Ar. Sarly Adre Bin Sarkum

Council Member of PAM, Vice President of MGBC, Director of BDA Architects Sdn Bhd.

Sarly pursued his architecture degree at the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom where he earned his B. Arts in Architecture in 1998. He currently leads the Kuala Lumpur office of BDA Architects Sdn. Bhd as Director and works with clients such as PETRONAS, UDA, Putrajaya Holdings and others.

Ar. Jeffery KB Cheah

Member of PAM & Partner of ZONE Architect.

Jeffery KB Cheah graduated from the University of Newcastle, Australia with Bachelors in Architecture. He earned his masters in Southern Cross University. He is the principal of ZONE Architect (KL) and is currently the Managing Director of Zone Architect Engineering (Abu Dhabi) and ZONE Engineering (Dubai).

Ar. Lee Chor Wah

Lecturer/Specialist II - University Tunku Abdul Rahman Principal - Lee Chor Wah Architect Director - Pentas Reka Sdn. Bhd. B. Arch (Hons) University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia.

Ar. Lee Chor Wah is currently a lecturer in the School of Architecture, UTAR. He was a former CEO of SN Low & Associates Sdn. Bhd. and is also a Past President of the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM). He was also a board member of the Board of Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM) as well as Vice President of Fiabci Malaysia in 2008 - 2009.

Aim for the title of regional winner and receive the prestigious Platinum Award with additional USD3,000!

All Gold Winners from each country will put their designs to the true test - to win the Platinum Award as regional winner.

All Gold winning designs will automatically qualify to contend for the prestigious title of Platinum Award that includes an additional USD3,000 and also invaluable regional exposure.

The judging process for the Platinum Award will gather the Gold Winners from participating Asian countries (Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Pakistan) for a final oral presentation in Malaysia.

PRESENTATION

The Gold Winner from each country will be required to give an oral presentation to a panel of judges.

Presentations will be held in Malaysia and must be delivered in English. Judges will determine the Platinum Award Winner of Nippon Paint Young Designer Award 2012 after the oral presentation.
